The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced a 30-day suspension on U.S. airline operations in Haiti amid escalating safety concerns, following two incidents of gunfire targeting commercial flights.
A Notice to Air Mission has been issued by the FAA, prohibiting U.S. civil aviation operations in the territory and airspace of Haiti below 10,000 feet.
The suspension was prompted by troubling incidents on Monday when a Spirit Airlines flight, bound for Haiti's capital, was struck by gunfire and had to detour to the Dominican Republic. Additionally, a JetBlue Airways flight, after returning from Port-au-Prince, was found with bullet damage upon its arrival in New York.
