French farmers have intensified their protests against a contentious trade agreement with the Mercosur bloc, emphasizing the potential threat to their livelihoods. The agreement, involving South American countries such as Brazil and Argentina, could increase agricultural imports to Europe, prompting outrage among the farming community.
The protests began with a rally in Aurillac, southern France, sparking a wave of demonstrations across the continent, led by major French farming unions. These groups fear the trade deal might be finalised at the upcoming G20 summit in Brazil, despite assurances from French officials against it.
Concerns focus on perceived disparities in environmental and labor standards, with farmers arguing that the deal favours South American imports over local produce. French President Emmanuel Macron has also voiced strong opposition, labeling the agreement as detrimental and outdated.
