In a move poised to bolster onion supply and price stability, the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) has dispatched 840 metric tonnes of onions to Delhi's Kishanganj Railway Station. This is the second bulk transportation by train following an earlier shipment of 1,600 MT on October 20, 2024.
For the first time, NAFED has adopted bulk onion transportation by rail to ensure prompt and cost-effective delivery across regions. Previously, 840 MT of onions were sent from Nashik to Chennai, and another shipment is currently en route to Guwahati. This complements the government's procurement of 4.7 lakh tonnes for a price stabilisation buffer.
NAFED and the National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India (NCCF) are extending their distribution network across 22 states, partnering with retail chains like SAFAL and Reliance Retail. Over 1.40 lakh tonnes of onions have been dispatched, contributing to price stability across major states, while rail shipments are expected to further ease regional prices.
