Malaysia Airlines has announced the resumption of direct flights between Kuala Lumpur and Kolkata, slated to begin on December 2. This move is part of the airline's strategy to enhance its presence in the Indian market.
Currently, Malaysia Airlines offers direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to nine Indian cities, including New Delhi and Mumbai. The addition of the Kuala Lumpur-Kolkata route will see five weekly flights utilizing Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
Discontinued in 2006, the Kolkata route's revival aligns with Malaysia Airlines' ambition to boost its total flights between Malaysia and India to 76 per week. This expansion highlights the importance of India to the airline's growth strategy, as emphasized by Ahmad Luqman Mohd Azmi, CEO of Malaysia Aviation Group.
