Taiwan Mobilizes as Super Typhoon Krathon Approaches

Taiwan has mobilized nearly 40,000 troops to bolster rescue efforts as Typhoon Krathon approaches its populous southwest coast, expected to bring a storm surge. The coast guard is also racing to locate 19 sailors who abandoned ship. This typhoon is anticipated to make landfall on the island's flat western plain, unlike most typhoons that hit the mountainous east coast.

Krathon is forecast to hit Kaohsiung, Taiwan's major port city, early on Wednesday afternoon. The Central Weather Administration (CWA) reported that the super typhoon will work its way across Taiwan and exit into the East China Sea. Kaohsiung, home to 2.7 million people, has declared a holiday and advised residents to stay indoors.

According to Li Meng-hsiang from the CWA, the storm has reached its peak intensity but could slightly weaken as it nears Taiwan. Mayor Chen Chi-mai compared the storm to 1977's Typhoon Thelma, urging residents to limit outdoor activity. Meanwhile, TSMC, a major tech manufacturer, has activated routine preparations and expects minimal operational impact.
