China's defense ministry clarified on Thursday that its recent intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launch was conducted for weapons testing and training, emphasizing that it was a routine and legitimate procedure.
On Wednesday, China announced it successfully launched an ICBM carrying a dummy warhead into the Pacific Ocean. This rare event has sparked international worries over China's expanding nuclear capabilities. In a monthly press briefing, the ministry's spokesperson reaffirmed that China's nuclear policy is stable, consistent, and predictable.
Defense ministry official Zhang Xiaogang stated that China's nuclear capabilities are kept at minimum levels necessary for national security. Zhang also highlighted that China had issued no-fly warnings and pre-informed several countries via military diplomatic channels to demonstrate transparency and openness regarding the launch.
