Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday highlighted the transformative impact of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. During his visit to Gujarat, Modi interacted with Jagshibhai Suthar and his family, beneficiaries of the initiative aimed at providing free solar electricity.
In a post on social media platform 'X,' Modi shared, "During my recent Gujarat visit, I went to the home of Jagshibhai Suthar. He and his family have benefitted from the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. I also met other beneficiaries of this scheme. Here are the highlights." The scheme seeks to supply free solar power to one crore households willing to install rooftop solar units.
The Government of India endorsed the scheme on February 29, 2024, to boost solar rooftop capacity and enable residential households to generate their own electricity. The initiative, with a Rs 75,021 crore outlay, is set to run until FY 2026-27 and will be executed by a National Programme Implementation Agency (NPIA) at the national level, and State Implementation Agencies (SIAs) at the state level.
The scheme offers a 60% subsidy for solar units up to 2kW and 40% for units between 2 to 3kW, capped at 3kW. Subsidies amount to Rs 30,000 for 1kW, Rs 60,000 for 2kW, and Rs 78,000 for 3kW systems at current prices.
The Distribution Utility (DISCOMs), serving as State Implementation Agencies, will facilitate measures to promote rooftop solar installations. This includes net meter availability, timely inspections, vendor registration, and interdepartmental convergence for government building solarization.
