An IndiGo flight originating in Mumbai and bound for Phuket was forced to make an unscheduled stop in Penang, Malaysia, on Friday due to severe weather conditions, according to the airline.
Passengers took to social media to report the flight diversion. IndiGo confirmed in a statement that flight 6E 1701 was diverted to Penang, the nearest available airport.
The airline said it is currently in the process of securing the necessary permissions to continue to Phuket. Passengers were kept informed and provided with refreshments. Details on the number of passengers onboard were not immediately available. The flight, using an A320 family aircraft, was diverted to ensure passenger safety.
