On Wednesday, the Coal Ministry convened a meeting to evaluate the progress of coal mines auctioned in different phases, emphasizing the government's commitment to ramping up domestic production. Chaired by Rupinder Brar, Additional Secretary and Nominated Authority, the review underscored a push to expedite the operationalization of near-completion coal blocks.

The Ministry stated that 71 coal blocks across nine states—Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, and West Bengal—are navigating various regulatory approvals. This initiative reflects the Ministry's proactive stance on overcoming challenges to fast-track the activation of coal blocks crucial for meeting the nation's growing energy demands.

By prioritizing these projects, the government aims to reduce dependency on coal imports and bolster domestic energy resources. The Ministry remains focused on enhancing India's energy security and supporting sustainable economic growth. In line with this objective, Union Minister of Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy launched the 10th tranche of commercial coal mine auctions on June 21 in Hyderabad.

The current round of allocations features mines in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana, and West Bengal. Odisha will see the highest number of offered mines at sixteen, followed by fifteen in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. Previously, Coal India Limited had allocated 23 coal mines to private sector bidders under a revenue-sharing model to tap into reserves of its idle underground mines.
