Kenya's Airport Strike: Worker Protests Impact Flights Over Proposed Adani Lease
A major strike at Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport by Kenya's aviation workers has caused significant flight delays and cancellations. Workers are protesting a proposed deal allowing India's Adani Group to lease the airport for 30 years. The Kenyan government insists the airport needs modernization but denies any sale plans.
Nairobi's primary international airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), faced severe disruptions Wednesday due to a strike initiated by its aviation workers.
The Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) spearheaded the protest against a proposed agreement allowing India's Adani Group to lease the airport for three decades. The union fears job losses and the influx of non-Kenyan employees under the new deal.
Despite government assurances that no final decision has been made regarding the public-private partnership, the strike led to long queues and chaotic scenes, as reported by local media. The high court has temporarily halted the agreement for judicial review.
