The Indian aviation sector must enhance its cybersecurity infrastructure by leveraging artificial intelligence, machine learning, and real-time threat detection systems, emphasized Director General of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), Zulfiquar Hasan, on Tuesday. Hasan addressed senior officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation and private airline representatives in New Delhi on the topic of 'Cybersecurity in Civil Aviation: A Futuristic Approach.'

Hasan highlighted that the civil aviation sector acts as a vital lifeline for global connectivity, economic growth, and international cooperation but is increasingly vulnerable to cyber threats. 'Our aircraft, airports, and air traffic control systems are now deeply intertwined with complex networks, making them more susceptible to cyber attacks, which are real, evolving, and potentially catastrophic,' he said. He noted the importance of robust cybersecurity to avoid severe operational, financial, and reputational damage, maintaining that it is not an option but a necessity for India's aviation sector.

He also announced an upcoming online cybersecurity and civil aviation course, set for September 11 in collaboration with Dr. Pawan Duggal, expected to be attended by over 8000 aviation professionals globally. This will be the world's largest collective effort to upskill the aviation workforce in cybersecurity, he said. Hasan also mentioned that BCAS is working closely with the International Civil Aviation Organization to address cybersecurity issues on an international level, making innovation in this field crucial for the safety of millions of passengers.
