Union Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu announced on Monday that his ministry is keeping a close watch on daily airfares, urging airline operators not to exploit passengers during the high-demand festival season.

'We are in constant communication with airline operators, advising them to maintain reasonable airfares,' Naidu told reporters at an event focusing on regional air connectivity. 'The ministry is committed to intervening as necessary.'

When asked about specific guidelines for airfares, Naidu emphasized that airfare determination is market-driven, making it impossible to impose a cap. 'So far, we have not observed any unreasonable fare increases, and the airlines are cooperating,' he said. 'If unexpected spikes occur, we will take appropriate action.'

Naidu also highlighted that maintaining affordable airfares has been a priority since he took charge. During a recent Parliament session, he addressed concerns about rising airfares, flight delays, and aviation infrastructure issues. He revealed that around 120 aircraft are grounded due to engine issues, adding pressure to the existing fleet and contributing to fare increases.

'India has 800 operational planes, with about 120 grounded due to engine problems. This leaves an additional burden on the operational aircraft, thus affecting prices,' he pointed out. On a positive note, Naidu announced that India has ordered 1,200 new aircraft, the highest number globally, and is ensuring their timely delivery to alleviate current pressures.
