The automotive industry must become self-reliant in the production of electronic parts, especially semiconductors, to reduce costly imports and keep product prices affordable, urged Maruti Suzuki India MD and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi on Monday.
Addressing the 64th annual ACMA session, Takeuchi noted that the industry is undergoing a transformative shift driven by increasing demand for comfort, convenience, safety, and adherence to evolving regulations.
He stressed that customers are seeking technology-driven experiences, leading to a significant increase in electronics in vehicles, and highlighted the challenge of developing and offering new-age technologies at affordable prices.
Takeuchi emphasized the necessity of investing in R&D, understanding local market dynamics, and collaborating across the value chain to achieve self-reliance. He pointed out the critical role of semiconductors and advocated for early collaboration with local manufacturers to reduce dependency on imports.
Developing a robust local ecosystem, including local testing facilities and enhancing design capabilities, is imperative for achieving self-sufficiency, Takeuchi added.
