BEML Ltd., a leading manufacturer of rail and Metro trainsets in India, inaugurated the prototype manufacturing of driverless Metro trainsets under the 5RS-DM Project for the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) on Saturday. This initiative covers Lines two and six, including the Bengaluru Airport Line.

The company secured the order for 53 trainsets in August 2023, valued at Rs 3,177 crore. The project encompasses the design, manufacture, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the trainsets, along with comprehensive maintenance services for up to 15 years under the Bangalore Metro Rail Project Phase 2, 2A, and 2B.

Each trainset, featuring a six-car formation, is entirely designed and developed by BEML's in-house engineering teams in Bengaluru. Constructed from high-tensile austenitic stainless steel, the trainsets ensure durability and safety. They will be equipped with effective air-conditioning through roof-mounted Saloon Air Conditioners and advanced passenger information and announcement systems for enhanced passenger comfort and security.
