A severe landslide, induced by heavy rainfall, has caused the collapse of a partially built railway station in Mizoram's Kolasib district, a senior official reported on Thursday.

The incident took place on Wednesday in Kawnpui, amidst relentless rains, according to the official.

The landslide damaged 50% of the station, which is part of the Bairabi-Sairang railway project, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) official confirmed.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The station's completion was initially slated for March next year, and the entire 51.38-km project aimed to connect Mizoram with the national network by July next year, with 93% of the work already done, per NFR officials.

Since August 19, Mizoram has been battered by heavy rain, causing numerous landslides and slips.

At least 42 casualties have resulted from natural disasters, including landslides, across the state since March this year, according to disaster management officials.
