India requires an additional 400 million women in the workforce to contribute USD 14 trillion to the economy, necessitating nearly doubling the current female labour force participation rate (LFPR) from 37% to 70% by fiscal year 2047, a new report reveals.

Non-profit organization The/Nudge Institute's Labour Force Participation Distillation Report, based on Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), underscores the need for increased female workforce participation to help India achieve its goal of becoming a USD 30 trillion economy by 2047. The report identifies significant disparities between male and female job security and recovery, advocating immediate and sustained efforts to integrate more women into the workforce.

The report suggests three key pathways to enhance female labour participation: redefining work through platform jobs and digital microwork, enhancing entrepreneurship opportunities through digital commerce infrastructure, and addressing mobility and digital access bottlenecks. Kanishka Chatterjee, Director & Head of The/Nudge Prize, emphasized the importance of overcoming economic, social, and cultural barriers to realize India's economic ambitions.
