The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution is set to overhaul the nearly six-decade-old regulations governing sugar production, storage, and pricing. The ministry has issued 'The Sugar (Control) Order, 2024' in draft form.

This reform comes in response to technological advancements in the sugar industry that necessitate an update to the existing Sugar (Control) Order of 1966. 'There are multiple changes in the sugar sector which necessitate the revamping of the Sugar (Control) Order, 1966,' stated the ministry while presenting the draft.

The draft outlines the government's authority to regulate sugar production, restrict its sale, storage, and disposal, and consider fair and remunerative price (FRP) while setting sugar prices. The ministry is inviting comments on this draft by September 23.
