TRAI Enforces Stricter Guidelines to Combat Fraudulent Telemarketing
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced new directives aimed at cleaning up the messaging ecosystem and preventing fraud. Effective September 1, 2024, the guidelines necessitate strict compliance from access service providers regarding URL, APK, and OTT link transmission, along with enhanced message traceability and punitive measures for non-compliance.

In a bid to secure the messaging ecosystem and prevent fraudulent activities, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued new directives to access service providers for stringent enforcement.
The guidelines mandate migration of telemarketing calls beginning with the 140 series to an online DLT platform by September 30, 2024, coupled with banning non-whitelisted URLs, APKs, OTT links, and call-back numbers starting September 1, 2024.
To enhance traceability, all messages must be traceable from sender to recipient by November 1, 2024. Non-compliance will result in punitive actions including blacklisting and potential suspension of services.
