One person has died and eight others are trapped, some with severe injuries, after a hotel partially collapsed overnight near the banks of Germany's river Moselle, local police confirmed on Wednesday.

The deceased victim has been located but not yet recovered, with authorities emphasizing the challenging nature of rescue operations. "Due to the nature of the damage, this is an extremely demanding operation," the police statement read. The building in the town of Kroev is only accessible to emergency workers exercising extreme caution.

Local broadcaster SWR shared images of the building, showing a severely slanted gable roof and a crushed ground floor. Authorities believe 14 people were inside when the upper floor gave way around 11 pm (2100 GMT) Tuesday, with five managing to escape unharmed.

Police also confirmed the evacuation of 31 neighbors from surrounding homes for safety reasons. The Moselle region, famous for its picturesque towns and vineyards, is a popular tourist destination.
