An innovative vineyard has been inaugurated in Blenheim by Associate Regional Development Minister Mark Patterson, marking a significant advancement for New Zealand’s wine industry. The new facility, located at the New Zealand Wine Centre – Te Pokapū Wāina o Aotearoa, features a covered design that allows for controlled environmental conditions, which will be crucial for adapting to future climate challenges.

According to Mr. Patterson, “The research generated at the Experimental Future Vineyard will be vital in preparing New Zealand’s wine sector for the impacts of changing weather patterns.” He emphasized the Coalition Government's commitment to economic growth, aiming to double export values and support regional development through strategic investments.

This state-of-the-art vineyard is set to play a key role in safeguarding and enhancing New Zealand’s $2.4 billion annual wine export industry. Marlborough, the country’s largest wine-producing region, contributes $637 million to GDP annually, accounting for 80 percent of New Zealand’s export wines. The sector also provides direct employment to over 2,900 people, with many more seasonal positions.

The facility, funded by a $900,000 allocation from a $3.79 million loan from Kānoa – Regional Economic Development & Investment Unit, will be managed by Plant & Food Research. The organization will collaborate with the Marlborough Research Centre and the wider wine industry to drive research and provide industry training, ensuring the sector remains competitive and resilient in the face of future challenges.
