Uncertain Future: Gaza War's Impact on Biden's IMEC Initiative
The White House states it is too early to determine the impact of the Gaza war on the US-led India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). Despite the conflict, President Biden remains committed to the project, which promises significant infrastructure and economic benefits for the region.
The future of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), an ambitious project spearheaded by US President Joe Biden, remains uncertain amid the ongoing Gaza conflict. According to the White House, it is still too early to assess the war's impact on this major infrastructure initiative.
'For the IMEC corridor, I think it's too soon to know whether there's going to be a big impact on that. The president's absolutely still committed to it,' said John Kirby, White House National Security Communications Advisor, during a Thursday press briefing.
The IMEC corridor, intended to forge a route from India to Europe via the Middle East, was announced during the G20 Summit in New Delhi on September 10, 2023. However, the conflict between Israel and Hamas has delayed the project, which is hailed for its potential to boost commerce and create jobs across the involved regions.
