Capital expenditure on the Railways has surged by 77% over the past five years, with notable investments in new lines, gauge conversion, and doubling, according to the Economic Survey 2023-24.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman tabled the survey in Parliament, highlighting an increase from ₹1.48 lakh crore in 2019-2020 to ₹2.62 lakh crore in 2023-24.

Indian Railways is the world's fourth largest network under single management, spanning over 68,584 route km and employing 12.54 lakh individuals. The survey cited key initiatives such as the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail project, and Dedicated Freight Corridors, showcasing their progress.

Launched in August 2023, the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme aims for continuous station development, identifying 1,324 stations for upgradation. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail project has achieved 41.7% physical progress, with significant financial investments.

Two Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs) are nearing completion, covering eastern and western routes. Indian Railways also achieved record production levels for locomotives and wagons in FY24, with 51 pairs of Vande Bharat trains introduced.

Plans to develop high-speed, long-distance Vande sleeper train coaches and Vande metro trainset coaches are underway, set for launch in FY25. Environmental initiatives include bio-toilet installations and waste management practices to ensure cleaner stations and tracks.
