The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) is poised to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies to streamline orders on its platform, according to an official release on Thursday. The government highlighted that these advanced technologies will significantly enhance services, with initiatives like an AI-based chatbot and intelligent search features already in development to improve user experience and operational efficiency.

A government source revealed that the GenAI-based chatbot is currently being tested in the User Acceptance Testing (UAT) environment of GeM. The chatbot's Q&A features are undergoing fine-tuning, with a beta version slated for production deployment in the second week of July 2024. The platform has witnessed substantial growth, with the Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) of orders doubling in the fiscal year of 2024 compared to the previous year, now standing at Rs 4,03,688 crore.

GeM has been a transformative platform for businesses, offering a digital marketplace for buying and selling goods and services. To bolster the support for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), GeM has launched new policies aimed at significantly reducing transaction charges. These moves are designed to create more opportunities for small businesses and sellers. Additionally, GeM is enhancing the seller experience with initiatives such as Seller Connect and the GeM SAHAYAK program, which streamline onboarding processes, cut down fees, and provide necessary training and support.

The government further disclosed plans to roll out a Pan-India network of trained and certified Accredited Trainers, known as GeM SAHAYAKs. This initiative will assist sellers and buyers in onboarding, optimize business opportunities, and simplify navigation on the GeM portal. The program is expected to not only enhance GeM's grassroots presence but also generate employment for around 5,000 candidates over time. It aims to formalize, standardize, and democratize capacity-building and consultancy practices within the market.

In its drive to expand offerings, GeM has introduced initiatives such as "The Aabhar Collection," which showcases unique gift hampers featuring indigenous products. This initiative promotes local artisans and caters to official events and ceremonies. Overall, GeM's comprehensive approach aims to empower businesses, stimulate growth, and foster a thriving digital marketplace for both buyers and sellers.
