The Delhi government's ambitious Mohalla bus service is poised for launch within the next month, according to officials. Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot has formed a dedicated committee to inspect the approved prototype of the bus.

The scheme aims to introduce nine-metre-long electric buses designed to improve local and feeder services. With plans to deploy 2,180 such buses by 2025, these vehicles target areas with limited road width and high congestion.

As part of the rollout process, the bus prototype has been undergoing inspection at Manesar in line with the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR). The specialized committee, consisting of officials from DIMTS, DTC, and the transport department, is focused on ensuring all required specifications are met.

"The inspection process is expected to conclude by July 7, post which these buses will undergo a week-long trial on public roads," said an official. Following successful trials, orders will be placed based on the production capabilities of the manufacturing company.

These buses will sport a blue and green color scheme, featuring 'Mohalla Bus' branding. In a significant move, 25% of the seats will be pink, reserved exclusively for women who will also benefit from free rides through 'Pink passes'.

Transport Minister Gahlot had previously inspected a prototype of the Mohalla bus at Rajghat bus depot, utilizing it for travel during the assembly budget session. Each bus will offer 23 seats and is specifically designed to enhance first and last-mile connectivity within Delhi.

By the end of 2025, the city aims to have a total fleet of 10,480 buses, with 80% being electric, reinforcing the government's commitment to sustainable and inclusive transport solutions.
