N Cape Premier Commits to Modernization and Economic Growth

Saul highlighted significant strides in delivering basic services to residents, noting substantial improvements since the advent of democracy in 1994.

Dr. Zamani Saul, Premier of the Northern Cape, has affirmed his administration's dedication to modernizing the province and boosting its economy, emphasizing these goals during his inaugural address at the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature in Kimberley.

In his speech, delivered following his swearing-in on June 14, 2024, Saul underscored the commitment of the seventh administration to accelerate progress in line with the six priority areas outlined in the 2024 ANC election manifesto. These priorities include job creation, fostering inclusive economic industries, addressing the cost of living, investing in human capital, defending democracy, and promoting continental development.

Saul highlighted significant strides in delivering basic services to residents, noting substantial improvements since the advent of democracy in 1994. He pointed out that access to flush toilets in households had risen to 73% by 2022, reflecting enhanced service provision. The Premier also cited advancements in education, noting a notable increase in school attendance among youth aged five to 24, as well as a decrease in the percentage of adults without formal education.

Regarding infrastructure and energy, Saul expressed optimism about the province's energy stability, celebrating over three months without load shedding, which he interpreted as a positive indicator for the future of energy supply.

Acknowledging challenges faced during the previous administration, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the aftermath of State Capture, Saul affirmed a commitment to learning from past mistakes and rebuilding trust with the Northern Cape's residents. He stressed the importance of collaborative efforts among political parties, civil society, the private sector, academia, and government spheres to achieve the Northern Cape Provincial Growth and Development Plan Vision 2040.

Addressing the youth, who constitute a significant portion of the province's population, Saul emphasized the importance of their involvement in developmental initiatives as co-creators. He highlighted the introduction of the Labour Activation Programme, aimed at providing skills development opportunities valued at over R545 million to benefit 23,000 unemployed youth.

Saul concluded his speech by endorsing a government of national unity under President Ramaphosa, pledging to lead with integrity, compassion, and diligence. He called for solidarity and support from all stakeholders in realizing the shared goals of economic growth, job creation, social welfare, infrastructure development, and good governance for the people of the Northern Cape.

The Premier's address sets a tone of optimism and proactive governance for the next five years, emphasizing inclusivity, progress, and sustainable development for the Northern Cape province.
