On Tuesday, the Council for Leather Exports (CLE) called for an extension of the Production-linked Incentive (PLI) scheme to bolster job creation, domestic manufacturing, and exports within the sector.
During a pre-budget meeting with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, CLE Chairman Rajendra Kumar Jalan also requested the government to provide import duty exemptions on wet blue, crust, and finished leather.
Jalan emphasized, "The implementation of PLI will lead to a structural transformation of the industry and will make the country a major manufacturing hub." He highlighted that the PLI scheme would significantly attract domestic and international investments, elevate modernisation, and spur start-ups, leading to an expanded production base.
