The International Labour Organization (ILO) has joined forces with key industry players to elevate South Africa’s footwear and leather sector through a series of impactful design workshops and scholarship opportunities. In collaboration with SAFLEC (South African Footwear and Leather Export Council), the eThekwini Footwear and Leather Cluster (EFLC), Edizioni AF, and ARSUTORIA School, these initiatives aim to bolster industry competitiveness and foster future leaders.

Empowering Industry Professionals

Participants in these workshops gained invaluable skills in integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI), understanding global fashion trends, and exploring innovative material usage. This knowledge directly contributes to enhancing product design and range building capabilities, equipping enterprises to innovate and compete effectively on an international scale. The workshops also facilitated networking opportunities, paving the way for potential collaborations and partnerships among participants.

AI and Design Innovation

Central to the workshops was the exploration of AI’s role in fashion, empowering enterprises to harness AI technologies to predict trends, streamline design processes, and accelerate time-to-market for their products. Practical sessions on integrating AI with human creativity provided actionable insights that participants can implement to produce unique, market-leading offerings.

Scholarship Opportunities

The workshops culminated in scholarship opportunities offered by ARSUTORIA School to outstanding performers. Dylan van Zyl from Bata SA and Sophia Khan from Smiley’s Footwear were awarded scholarships for a 5-week Design course on shoes and bags at ARSUTORIA School in Milan, Italy. These scholarships not only recognize their achievements but also serve as catalysts for their future careers, unlocking new opportunities and dreams.

Industry Impact and Future Prospects

The workshops, held in Durban and Cape Town, attracted nearly 50 participants, with a majority being female. All participants received internationally recognized certificates, enhancing their credentials and industry credibility. The training sessions are expected to catalyze export growth, drive economic expansion, and diversify product offerings within South Africa’s footwear and leather industry.

Commitment to Economic Growth

Stefano Migliavacca from Edizioni AF emphasized the transformative potential of these initiatives in addressing South Africa’s design deficiencies and positioning local manufacturers to compete globally. The collaboration between SAFLEC, ILO, Edizioni AF, and ARSUTORIA School underscores a commitment to fostering economic prosperity and promoting decent work within the sector.

ILO’s Productivity Ecosystems Initiative

Aligned with South Africa’s priority master plans and transformation agenda, the ILO’s Productivity Ecosystems for Decent Work South Africa Project focuses on enhancing productivity and promoting decent work in the leather, leather goods, and footwear sector. Launched in July 2022, this project aims to overcome productivity constraints and drive sustainable growth in the industry.

Through strategic partnerships and targeted initiatives, the ILO and its collaborators are paving the way for South Africa’s footwear and leather industry to thrive in a competitive global landscape. By empowering industry professionals with cutting-edge skills and opportunities, these efforts are set to foster innovation, economic resilience, and inclusive growth.
