This summer, the Brussels Flower Carpet Show on the Grand-Place is on a run from the 16th of August till the 19th and is surely a spectacular one with the theme “Guanajuato, cultural pride of Mexico” composed by 120 volunteers. Nearly 1 million begonia flowers are used to decorate the carpet in less than 4 hours in a dimension of 77m x 24m.

The carpet is prepared every two years and incorporates themes for across the globe which signifies special flower traditions.

This year is the 21st edition of the Flower Carpet and the Mexican theme was considered because of the similarity the tradition of “La Octava Noche” of the city of Uriangato in the state of Guanajuato in Mexico holds with the Flower Carpet tradition. In the Mexican tradition, locals decorate kilometers of roads and streets with colored sawdust.

Guanajuato is also considered to be a region of untold cultural treasures and abode to many indigenous civilizations. They are famous for their rich craftwork and culture. The Flower Carpet this year will also the first Latin American carpet on the soil of Belgium.

The best view of the carpet can be had from the City Town Hall balcony but the crowd is expected to be very dense.

 This year, it is twenty years exactly since the Grand-Place in Brussels was recognized as a Unesco World Heritage site. What better way to celebrate this than ... yes, with flowers! During the Flower Carpet, dozens of carpet artists from all over the world will gather in the Belgian capital for a floral Unesco exhibition at Brussels’ Bourse square. A tour along eight flower carpets will take you by some of the world’s top tourist attractions.

This year is also marking the twentieth anniversary of the Grand-Place in Brussels to be in the list of the UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. Hence, to commemorate the event, there will also be a flower exhibition where carpet artists from all over the world will gather at the Brussels’ Bourse square.

They will be making eight other flower carpets taking the viewer on a tour of the world’s top tourist attractions.
