Navigating Peace: Black Sea Diplomacy Between Ukraine and Turkey

On Monday, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha engaged in pivotal talks with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan regarding the safe passage of shipping vessels in the Black Sea. The discussions aimed at enhancing cooperation between Ukraine and Türkiye, particularly in the defense sectors.

Sybiha emphasized the critical need to uphold freedom of navigation amidst ongoing tensions, especially following recent Russian strikes that have impacted Ukrainian Black Sea port infrastructures, damaging four civilian vessels. This meeting is pivotal as Ukraine seeks Turkish support to mitigate these attacks.

Turkey, maintaining diplomatic relations with both Russia and Ukraine, proposes to mediate peace in the conflict while advocating for initiatives like the Black Sea grain deal. This agreement facilitated Ukrainian exports until Russia's withdrawal from the accord in July 2023.
