Sri Lanka's Kamindu Mendis has clinched the ICC Men's Player of the Month award for September, marking his second accolade of 2024. With a stellar performance in Tests, including two centuries and a record-breaking run tally, Mendis has become the first player to achieve this honor twice in a year.
Sri Lankan cricket sensation Kamindu Mendis has been crowned the ICC Men's Player of the Month for September, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Monday. Mendis delivered commanding performances in four Test matches, amassing 451 runs at an impressive average of 90.20. His efforts included two centuries, instrumental in securing a crucial win against England at The Oval, and contributing significantly to a series victory over New Zealand back in Sri Lanka.
Mendis's recognition marks his second time receiving this prestigious award in 2024, making him the first player to achieve it twice in the same year. He surpassed tough competitors, including fellow Sri Lankan Prabath Jayasuriya and Australian Travis Head, showcasing his growing influence in international cricket. Mendis expressed his elation at being honored, highlighting that his continuous hard work is gaining consistent recognition on the global stage.
During his outstanding run in September, Mendis became the first men's player to achieve a half-century in each of his first eight Test matches. He matched the legendary Don Bradman's record by reaching 1,000 Test runs in only 13 innings, the fastest in 75 years. Notably, his unbeaten 182 in the second Test against New Zealand set the tone for a significant Sri Lankan win, while his 114 in a challenging situation in the series opener was pivotal to his team's narrow victory.
