AI Revolutionizing Game Development: A New Era of Efficiency and Profitability

Morgan Stanley reports that advanced artificial intelligence tools could slash video game development costs by half, potentially unlocking an additional $22 billion in annual profits. These tools, capable of automating tasks like creating gaming environments and generating dialogue, promise to streamline production timelines, making game development more efficient.

However, the brokerage warns that the benefits may not be evenly distributed across the entire industry. It anticipates that approximately $55 billion out of the estimated $275 billion global consumer spending on video games this year will be reinvested in game development and operations. This means that companies with scaled platforms, proprietary data, and successful live operations are poised to be the biggest beneficiaries.

Major gaming platforms like Tencent, Sony, and Roblox, alongside large publishers such as Take-Two, Electronic Arts, and Ubisoft, are well-positioned to leverage AI across multiple titles. Conversely, companies with less established franchises might face increased competition as AI reduces the cost of creating mid-scale games. Platforms such as Unity and Unreal Engine face a pivotal choice between adapting and risking disruption.
