Chad announced on Tuesday its decision to license Starlink, Elon Musk's satellite internet venture, to improve internet connectivity in the central African nation. This strategic move aims to address the country's significant internet infrastructure challenges.
Communications Minister Boukar Michel revealed that talks with Starlink began in 2021, leading to this milestone. With only 12% internet penetration as per World Bank metrics, Chad stands to benefit greatly from Starlink's capabilities, especially in regions not covered by fibre optics. The enhanced access is expected to facilitate the digitalization of public services and nurture tech start-ups in the region.
While Starlink expands its footprint in Africa, it encounters regulatory hurdles. Cameroon, for instance, ordered Starlink equipment seizures earlier this year, underscoring the resistance faced. In Kenya, telecom giant Safaricom has urged for regulatory frameworks requiring satellite providers like Starlink to collaborate with local operators.
