Rising Trade Tensions: EU's Call for Transparency in China
The EU seeks transparency as trade tensions with China escalate. European businesses face challenges in Chinese market access, highlighted by discrimination against EU medical devices. Tensions increased following EU and Chinese investigations into various industries, leading to new tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.
The European Union's ambassador to China expressed a strong desire to avoid a trade war despite five years of stagnant negotiations. Concerns are mounting about the EU's market access for medical devices in China.
Trade tensions have been rising between the EU and China. This escalation followed the EU's investigation into Chinese electric vehicle imports, which resulted in retaliatory probes by Beijing into Europe's pork and dairy sectors and restrictions on brandy imports. Recently imposed EU tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles have added to the tension.
Further aggravating the situation, the EU launched an investigation into China's public procurement of medical devices in April, a move criticized by Beijing. At a Shanghai event, EU Ambassador Jorge Toledo highlighted discrimination against European medical device manufacturers in China's procurement processes, accusing China of unfair practices.
