Indonesia has announced a ban on the sale of Google's smartphones, following its recent decision to block Apple's iPhone 16 sales. The government cited non-compliance with regulations mandating at least 40% locally manufactured components in these devices.
Industry ministry spokesperson Febri Hendri Antoni Arief noted the policy's aim to ensure fair competition among investors in Indonesia. He added that while consumers can purchase Google Pixel phones abroad, these might face deactivation if sold illegally within Indonesia.
Experts, however, argue that such measures could harm consumer choice and undermine investor confidence. Bhima Yudhistira from the Center of Economic and Law Studies criticized the move as being 'pseudo' protectionism that could deter foreign investment in the country's growing tech market.
