In a sophisticated online fraud scheme, an ex-NRI lost close to Rs 6 crore, police reported on Wednesday. The victim, who regularly traded using the Zerodha platform, was deceived by criminals masquerading with a bogus contest community under the name 'Vijay Bajaj.'
According to police, the scammers instructed the victim to install a counterfeit app, falsely associated with Zerodha, and join multiple trading groups. They lured him into making hefty deposits across various accounts by showing fake profit gains.
Upon suspecting deception, especially after a demand for another 20 percent deposit, the victim reached out to cybercrime authorities, filing a report on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. The culprits capitalized on his previous trading interest, exacerbating the need for heightened vigilance among online users, agents caution.
