The Ministry of Electronics and IT in India is preparing to meet with IT hardware companies next week to discuss proposed import rules for devices such as tablets and personal computers. This meeting follows recent government measures to restrict imports of these goods.

According to official sources, the government has extended the current approval system for importing specific IT hardware products, including laptops and tablets, through December 31, 2023. The purpose of this extension is to closely monitor inbound shipments without disrupting market supply.

In response to industry concerns, the government introduced an import management system in October last year. This system aims to ensure that imports comply with India's trusted supply chain requirements. The new licensing regime affects a variety of IT products and has already processed over 100 applications seeking import authorization.
