Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov has highlighted the critical role of AI-enabled drones on the Ukrainian battlefield, emphasizing the need for enhanced troop training. A recent ministry video showcased Belousov at a facility dedicated to next-generation drone technology, engaging with drone operators.

A demonstration featured an AI-powered drone using automatic image recognition to target a small river vessel. 'It locks onto the target and pursues it even without control,' a soldier explained to the minister. According to Belousov, two AI drone units are active in eastern Ukraine and the Belgorod and Kursk regions, successfully countering Ukrainian incursions.

The Russian ministry aims to establish five additional drone units operating round-the-clock. Belousov stressed the necessity of appropriate training, as President Vladimir Putin announced plans to increase drone production significantly. Ukraine also leverages drones extensively, notably instigating a massive explosion at a Russian arsenal last month.
