OpenAI, renowned for its AI models including ChatGPT, has raised $6.6 billion, giving it a potential valuation of $157 billion, making it one of the world's most valuable private companies. This massive influx of capital was secured from prominent investors such as Thrive Capital, Khosla Ventures, and tech giant Microsoft, with Nvidia joining the ranks.
The capital influx comes during a time of significant internal reorganization, marked by the unexpected exit of Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati. The funding round also saw participation from Altimeter Capital, Fidelity, SoftBank, and Abu Dhabi's MGX. Thrive Capital alone contributed $1.2 billion, with options to increase its stake in the future contingent upon business success.
Despite existing corporate restructures and leadership dynamics, investor enthusiasm remains high, driven by OpenAI's revenue projections and the popularity of its products. The company seeks to pivot towards artificial general intelligence (AGI) while becoming a profitable entity, navigating a complex restructuring to encourage further investment growth.
