Hedi Slimane Exits Celine Amidst Industry Turmoil
Fashion designer Hedi Slimane is leaving LVMH's Celine brand, prompting further industry speculation as sales decline. Michael Rider will succeed him early next year. Slimane, famous for his rocker-chic style, joined Celine in 2018 and significantly boosted brand revenue. The luxury fashion sector is experiencing a sales slump, particularly in China.
Fashion designer Hedi Slimane has left LVMH's Celine brand, the company announced on Wednesday, marking a high-profile departure amid a sales downturn in the fashion industry. LVMH has appointed Michael Rider as Slimane's successor, effective early next year. Rider previously worked with former Celine designer Phoebe Philo for over a decade.
The departure of Slimane, known for his rocker-chic aesthetic, is expected to stir further speculation about industry upheaval, as numerous top designers have recently changed positions. Virginie Viard's exit from Chanel in June left one of the most coveted roles in fashion unfilled. Analysts like Luca Solca from Bernstein believe creative directors leave when they no longer positively impact sales.
Slimane, who joined Celine in 2018, made significant contributions to the brand, doubling its revenue to around €2.5 billion. He is also known for introducing a menswear line, fragrances, and makeup at Celine while updating the brand's French bourgeois aesthetic for a younger audience.
