EU Commission Queries Content Algorithms of YouTube, Snapchat, and TikTok

The EU Commission has formally requested information from YouTube, Snapchat, and TikTok about the parameters their algorithms use to recommend content to users. The commission aims to investigate these platforms' roles in amplifying systemic risks like those related to elections, mental health, and minors' protection.

These requests fall under the Digital Services Act (DSA) and also aim to explore the platforms' measures to mitigate the spread of illegal content, including illegal drugs and hate speech. Additional queries were sent to TikTok about measures the firm has taken to prevent bad actors from manipulating the application, particularly around elections and civic discourse.

The tech companies have until November 15 to supply the requested information. Post that, the commission will make decisions, which may include fines. The DSA mandates that major tech companies take stronger actions against illegal and harmful content. Previously, non-compliance proceedings under the DSA have been initiated, impacting platforms like Facebook, Instagram, AliExpress, and TikTok.
