The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Delhi have collaborated to create lightweight bulletproof jackets, dubbed 'ABHED,' that offer the highest threat level protection and 360-degree safety.

The Defence Ministry revealed that these jackets, developed at the DRDO Industry Academic Centre of Excellence, will be transferred to three industries for production. The modular-design jackets weigh between 8.2 kg and 9.5 kg, depending on the BIS levels, and feature front and rear armours for complete protection.

Using polymers and indigenous boron carbide ceramic materials, the jackets have successfully passed all research and development trials. The initiative highlights the promising ecosystem of defense R&D, featuring collaborations between DRDO, academia, and industry.
