Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd (Tata Power-DDL) announced on Monday that it has been awarded a 20-year patent for its pioneering self-regenerating transformer breather technology.
The 'Self-Regenerating Breather' is designed to protect transformers from moisture ingress, thereby extending their operational lifespan, according to a company statement.
According to Tata Power-DDL, a leading power utility serving over 2 million customers in North Delhi, the newly patented technology will reduce maintenance requirements by significantly lowering the frequency of Silica gel replacements in transformer breathers. The innovative device was developed and tested by Tata Power-DDL's engineering team in December 2015, with successful pilot installations following in 2016-17. The company filed for the patent in 2016.
The new technology leverages waste heat from the transformer's top plate to reduce moisture content in the air inlet to the distribution transformer (DT) Breather, mitigating risks of outages and prolonging transformer life.
Chief Executive Officer Gajanan S Kale emphasized that the patent underscores the company's technological prowess and its preparedness for challenging weather conditions.
