Russia's New Drone, The Garpiya-A1: A Fusion of Chinese Technology and Military Strategy

Russia has rolled out the Garpiya-A1, a new long-range drone using Chinese engines and parts, which it deployed in the Ukraine conflict, according to European intelligence sources and documents obtained by Reuters. From July 2023 to July 2024, more than 2,500 units were produced by IEMZ Kupol, a subsidiary of Russian state-owned Almaz-Antey.

This new drone, incorporating Chinese technology, marks a shift from Russia's reliance on Iranian designs for long-range drones. The Garpiya has been utilized against military and civilian targets in Ukraine, according to the same sources, causing significant damage and casualties. Images of the drone wreckage from Ukraine have been shared, but Reuters could not independently verify them.

NATO has urged China to cease its support for Russia in the conflict. Despite international concerns, Chinese exports of crucial drone components to Russia persist, with a former cement factory in Izhevsk being converted to produce these drones. The ongoing collaboration underscores the complex geopolitical entanglements fueling the Ukraine war.
