The European Union has launched an investigation into one of Google's artificial intelligence models over potential breaches of the bloc's stringent data privacy regulations. Ireland's Data Protection Commission is leading the inquiry into Google's Pathways Language Model 2, commonly referred to as PaLM2.

This probe is part of a broader initiative by the EU's national watchdogs to closely monitor how AI systems manage personal data. The Irish commission, acting as Google's primary regulator within the EU under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), is examining whether PaLM2's data processing practices pose a high risk to individuals' rights and freedoms in the EU.

The inquiry into PaLM2 aligns with other actions against major tech companies, such as the recent decision by X (formerly known as Twitter) to stop processing user data for its AI chatbot Grok and Meta Platforms halting its plans to use European users' content to train AI models. Google has yet to respond to requests for comment.
