India aims to establish 10 semiconductor manufacturing plants over the next decade, according to a top official from the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM).

Speaking at a joint press conference held by the mobile devices industry body ICEA and Semicon India organizer Semi, ISM head Akash Tripathi outlined the ambitious vision of getting multiple semiconductor manufacturing plants, display fabs, and compound semiconductor facilities.

Tripathi detailed how the government received 20 proposals for semiconductor units, including chip packaging plants, with five projects already approved, entailing an investment of Rs 1.52 lakh crore. Micron's pilot facility began rolling out chips in May, six months ahead of its scheduled timeline. Semi President Ajit Manocha emphasized the immense job creation potential in the sector and pointed out that the upcoming Semicon India 2024 event will see participation from over 250 companies across 24 countries.
