Controversy and Lawsuit: Netflix's 'IC-814' Faces Legal Heat from ANI

Indian news agency ANI has initiated legal action against Netflix Inc and the producers of an Indian series that dramatizes a plane hijacking, alleging unauthorized use of its content. ANI's lawyer disclosed this development to Reuters on Monday.

The series, titled "IC-814: The Kandahar Hijack," is a fictional account of the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines flight 814 from Kathmandu. Released last month, it has sparked controversy, with social media users and members of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party criticizing its portrayal of the hijackers as Hindus instead of Muslims.

In response to these criticisms, Netflix added new disclaimers to the six-episode show last week, after being summoned by India's information and broadcasting ministry. The streaming giant defended its depiction, stating that the code names used in the series were reflective of those from the actual event. Sidhant Kumar, ANI's counsel, stated, "They have used copyright archival footage of ANI without license, they have also used the (ANI) trademark."

Kumar added that due to the backlash, ANI's trademark and brand name are being tarnished, leading them to demand the removal of four episodes featuring its content. Monday saw the Delhi High Court agree to hear the case and seek Netflix's response, although Netflix has yet to comment. The 1999 hijack has been attributed by India to Pakistan and Pakistan-based militant groups.
