The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT) has officially launched its inaugural Broadband and Digital Skills for Municipalities Programme in Polokwane, Limpopo. The initiative, aimed at equipping municipal councillors with essential digital skills, marks a significant step towards leveraging technology to enhance public service delivery and economic growth.

Communications and Digital Technologies Minister Solly Malatsi addressed participants at the launch, emphasizing the importance of digital skills for councillors to effectively manage and advance broadband infrastructure projects. “The time is ripe for government to equip councillors with digital skills to propel technology use in serving the nation and growing the economy,” Malatsi said.

The launch brought together councillors from across Limpopo and digital experts, highlighting the collaborative effort behind the programme. The DCDT has partnered with the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) and the British High Commission under a Declaration of Intent signed between the South African Government and the United Kingdom, funded through the UK’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) Fund.

The programme’s objective is to empower municipal managers and councillors to manage broadband deployment inclusively, ensuring wider digital connectivity for underserved and digitally disconnected communities. Malatsi noted that, “In a world where public representatives are faced with numerous service delivery queries and decisions, having digital skills will enable them to work smarter, resolve queries faster, and be more accessible to residents.”

UK High Commissioner Antony Phillipson also spoke at the event, underscoring the role of digital technology in driving economic growth and development. “Digital technology is a powerful catalyst for economic growth. This UK-funded project reflects our commitment to digital inclusion and partnership with South Africa, ensuring that no one is left behind as we transition to a digital future,” Phillipson said.

The launch event was followed by a two-day training session for councillors. The training is part of a continuous effort to ensure that municipal representatives are well-equipped to deliver services effectively in the digital age and contribute to sustainable development.

The programme is set to expand to other provinces, ensuring comprehensive coverage and support for all municipal councillors across South Africa.
