The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has disconnected 2.75 lakh telephone numbers and blocked services to 50 entities in a bid to crack down on pesky calls and unregistered telemarketers.

The directive follows an alarming rise in spam calls, with more than 7.9 lakh complaints reported in the first half of 2024, TRAI said in a statement issued on Tuesday.

TRAI has mandated access providers to immediately halt promotional voice calls from unregistered senders or telemarketers. The measures are anticipated to significantly reduce spam calls and provide relief to consumers.
