The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has reported a sharp increase in spam calls, with over 7.9 lakh complaints lodged against Unregistered Telemarketers (UTMs) in the first half of 2024, from January to June. In response to this growing issue, TRAI issued strict directives to all Access Providers on 13th August 2024.

TRAI has mandated that Access Providers must immediately halt promotional voice calls originating from unregistered senders or telemarketers using Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), Primary Rate Interface (PRI), or other telecom resources. Any UTM found to be misusing these resources will face severe penalties, including the disconnection of all telecom services for up to two years and blacklisting.

Following these directives, Access Providers have implemented stringent measures to curb the misuse of telecom resources for spamming. As a result, over 50 entities have been blacklisted, and more than 2.75 lakh SIP DID, mobile numbers, and other telecom resources have been disconnected. These actions are expected to significantly reduce spam calls and provide much-needed relief to consumers.

TRAI continues to urge all stakeholders to adhere to the directives and contribute to creating a cleaner and more efficient telecom ecosystem in India.
