U.S. facial recognition company Clearview AI has been fined 30.5 million euros ($33.7 million) by the Dutch data protection watchdog DPA for the creation of an illegal database.
DPA also imposed an additional penalty of up to 5 million euros on Clearview for non-compliance. Clearview has not objected to the decision and, as a result, cannot appeal the fine.
DPA Chairman Aleid Wolfsen stated that facial recognition technology is highly intrusive and cannot be used indiscriminately. The use of Clearview's services is illegal under Dutch regulations. Last week, Uber was also fined by DPA for breaching EU data rules.
